sits my heart.

It has grown,

it has been loved,

and it has been left to soak in all the warmth around it.

My heart has seen sadness.

It has scarred and endured.

It has seen pain and been devoured by darkness,

but my heart is a fighter.

At 19 years old,

my heart is in a box.

It is preserved,

slowly but surely

healing in that sturdy locked box.

Then love came along.

My heart was weary and suspicious,

accusing and pessimistic.

When love stared at me,

I pretended the cracks forming were non-existent,

but they were there

and love was suddenly omniscient.

Day after day,

month after month,

love broke down the walls and allowed me to breathe freely

for what felt like the first time.

Love was my friend,

Love is my everything.

I handed love the key to my box

without fear of anything.

Now I am here at 20 years,

my box is unlocked, and there

sits my beating heart.

It is there,

wide open to everything love gives

and even the pain I know love could inflict.

It sits ready to heal, ready to feel;
