It was a normal summers day in Mayfield. Students were returning to school, stories of what they did during summer break, girls sharing the latest gossip, even the teachers were talking up a storm. Our school was actually rather small, holding only about 300 students. The community was little, and everyone knew everyone and everything. But there was one story that stood out from the crowd. A tragic tale of a student, who took his life, because he lost hope.
It was 2014, and I just started my senior year. This was going to be the best year yet! The auditorium was filled to the brim with staff and students. From paper airplanes to passing around notes, everyone waited for the principal to get on with the new school year speech. Now, Mr. Baxby was a great principal. But his speeches? They would even make a snail yawn. And the school jocks would let him know it too, by making snobby remarks or the popular girls making rude comments. But I never payed them any mind, for I was always daydreaming of the day of graduation, and the success to come.
"Now let's have a word from our class president, Oswald Patterson!" My thoughts pop away into reality as I make my way to the podium. My nerves tense up as the roar and cheering of the students congratulate me. I couldn't tell if they were rooting for me, or the fact I'm the one who dismisses everyone to there new courses. Either way, I had to make it count. For this year, everything was about to change.
"Welcome back everyone, to the school year of 2013! And to my fellow senior colleagues of 2014!" The class of only 28 students clapped and cheered, which seemed to be the loudest in the auditorium. " I want to thank everyone for your patience as we prepare to start the new school year. As you may know, our school is ranked the 2nd best school in the state of Virginia. As your school president, it is my part to make sure that we stay up in the ranks, and to beat our neighboring schools. And if we continue with all our hard work, we just might... no... We WILL be the number one school by the end of the year!! "
The sound of teens roaring through the auditorium echoed through the halls as everyone made there way to their designated classes. My new schedule had 6 classes, with one letting me start my way into learning a trade. I still have not decided on what I wanted to do, but I had a good feeling about three. My first hour consisted of fine literature. As I was about to walk through the door when out of the blue, there was a hand on my shoulder. "Yo, yo, yo!! If it isn't the school Prez. on his way to stardom!" It was Samuel. He has been my best friend since 2nd grade. And now, here we are, inseparable."Dude, principal Baxby's speech was all like, snoresville. Then when you stepped up to the throne, it was all like... Oz! Oz! Oz! You really do have a rep thing going on here man." I can really say, he has my back. Considering he can be considered a laughing stock in the entire school, he was as much as a hippie there was; tall and thin, wore tye die shirt with a long sleeve undershirt, sandals, and this really old beanie he has worn since we met. I tried to keep it simple; a formal vest look with khakis. Where he was all laid back without a care in the world, I was the more strict, cautious type. But I try to look after him, considering he gets picked on by the other students. And he smiles all the time, even when he knows people put him down. He never let's a bunch of bad apples ruin his day. Of course, most of the time, he stays high.
As we get into our seats, he leans over to whisper, "So, how about it man? What are your big plans after blowing this taco stand?" I couldn't think of anything to say except probably a internship in a office. "What? Come on man. That's like, the lamest thing to ever come out of your mouth! You have so much potential than to waste away in a lame office, in a very lame building, staring at extremely lame screen with no time for fun, man!" I wish I didn't tell him that. He never did like anything that required thinking. I believe its due to the injuries he has been in at the skate park, which seems to be the only main place he stays.
"I think it's time we started class you two." Said a soft voice; " You might be school president, but I'm still the monarch in this classroom." It was Mrs. McCann. A very kind, but strict teacher. "Sorry Mrs. McCann. " She nodded, "Very good. And as for you, Mr. Clydeborne, It behooves me to let you know that it's quite important to stay awake during this class." He nodded his head in a goofy manner that made the whole class bust out laughing. "I'll sure try my best Mrs. McCann, man. No lie, I'm totally not going to stay awake for this class. " He whispered as she walked away in a not so amused way; "At least we know who is the elected class clown." She shrugged. "But, there has to always be some type of amusement around here. But without further a due, Let this class begin!" "More like, let this nap begin." Samuel whispered as he wiggled his head into his arms to get ready for his nap.
