She gasped, stuffing her lungs with air, burning them as if they’ve never before held oxygen. Her chest rose from the breath, ribs creaking like worn bones, filling with organs and tissue that felt heavy from underuse. Blood worked its way to her limbs, and they twitched, dense with bones and muscles that have never felt so weighted before. Her eyes flurried open to a blurred world of green and browns. She blinked away the haze, taking time to adjust to the broken sunlight as if she were stuck in darkness her entire life. 803Please respect copyright.PENANAX3vtPleSIs
She stretched her legs, her calves searing in pain, digging the soles of her feet into the soil beneath her. It was soft, cold, and wet, sending frigid prickles to the tips of her toes. She looked around, her neck sore, but the world was still a blurry mess. She blinked with more ferocity before pulling an aching arm to her face, missing her eyes as if she had completely forgotten where they were. The outer crook of her wrist are what landed in her sockets instead, and she was already exhausted from that action alone to try and correct herself. She rubbed weakly at her eyes with her wrist, as that was all the power she could currently muster. What little strength she had left seemed to work.803Please respect copyright.PENANAnUl2Hhsf2h
The blur melded into sharp lines, separating colors from one another and forming objects. The greens shaped into the leaves of shrubs and tree tops, the browns their branches and trunks. Her hands spread against the damped soil, pressing her palms against the earth. It was so cool against her skin, tingling down her spine like first-day-jitters.803Please respect copyright.PENANA98NdZmeY5L
Her breath escaped her lips, leaving them coated in the same coolness that caressed her. 803Please respect copyright.PENANAY9WHkSOPgZ
Where the sun broke through the smiling branches, warmth danced across her frigid skin. It invited her to rise from the cold, dampened dirt and into its welcoming embrace.803Please respect copyright.PENANAHAf6jQ32Fk
She closed her eyes, the corners of her dry mouth pulling up into a sore, stretched smile, crinkling the skin on her face like damp paper that had freshly dried. But that didn’t matter. For once in a long time, she felt…alive.
Hello? 803Please respect copyright.PENANAxasP3djxXh
A voice, fainter than the whispering fireflies, forced him to look up from his class work.803Please respect copyright.PENANAlDmh80RM0t
Students turned to one another with quizzing eyes, wondering what it was that they had all just heard.803Please respect copyright.PENANAe5p9rNcDUU
Can you see me? 803Please respect copyright.PENANA0OyKe5DH4O
His eyes whirled straight to the ceiling, scanning their tiled gleam. Gasps echoed though the hushed classroom as the students began searching the ceiling. 803Please respect copyright.PENANAgmTrgOUNlB
Can any of you see me? 803Please respect copyright.PENANABm1fY8YrGi
The voice, though still as soft as the morning dew, grew harsher with a hint of urgency laced in every vowel. He flinched at the biting tone, feeling as if it were right in his ear. 803Please respect copyright.PENANAkbiRYcVZPN
Everyone, now hushed by the harsher tone, had their eyes glued to the air above them. 803Please respect copyright.PENANAFCWSZP0anX
The temperature suddenly plummeted, forcing goose bumps up his arms. He shivered, slowly breathing out. His clouded breath greeted him… 803Please respect copyright.PENANAjd7IcLdGKA
Why can’t anyone see me…? 803Please respect copyright.PENANAYujtTMZJ4I
The whisper grew faint before withering nothing. The room suddenly grew wet and humid, as if the class were stuck inside a pressure cooker, forcing the air out of his lungs. His eyes darted from corner to corner frantically, looking for something that just might happen simply because he felt like it should. He turned to the other students. Their eyes were growing with the seeds of terror, and confused panic spread like a wave throughout the classroom.803Please respect copyright.PENANAjKmLM91EPE
The door to the classroom opened and shut quickly, earning yelps from the class. All at once, the oppressive aura was gone, and the teens let out a held breath. 803Please respect copyright.PENANAjOapeaTjbG
The room suddenly erupted into heated life, pointing out the door. “Who was that?!”803Please respect copyright.PENANApqcKO6Ioyf
“Is everyone here?” 803Please respect copyright.PENANAoEUZlDT1UE
“Why is the room so cold?” 803Please respect copyright.PENANAMhyW3Pfn73
“Was that a…ghost?” 803Please respect copyright.PENANAH3ZggaYDFd
Girly screams burst from the back of the room. 803Please respect copyright.PENANAkMNbTMJz8C
His seat screeched back as he stood and made his way to the classroom door. While his classmates sat and fumbled with their thumbs, he had to go and find answers. 803Please respect copyright.PENANADlUd2ROiUw
“Russell? Where are you going?” The class president stopped him as his hand wrapped around the knob. Her crystal blue eyes were glistening above dark furrowed brows, her heart shaped face ending with a frown atop her chin. 803Please respect copyright.PENANAay7rteCZNp
He paused, his hand just turning the knob. “I’m going to see who that was, of course.” 803Please respect copyright.PENANAc7yJbI8jtN
More gasps and wild chatter was the response to his boldness. He rolled his eyes before he walked out, and was greeted by a rush of cool air. 803Please respect copyright.PENANAxdOoC7GoE9
