We found an elevator and Car-ri and I made our way down to the first floor. We surprisingly bumped right into John, James and Naomi.
“Guys!” I said.
“Are you okay?” Naomi said. “We’ve been looking for you for hours.”
“Yeah I think I’m fine. I was with Dr. Maddison.”
“Who’s she?” James pointed at Car-ri.
“Car-ri. She’s coming with us.” I noticed that there was also an extra person with them, “Who’s he?”
“My dad, we found him,” Naomi smiled.
Joseph was unrecognizable compared to the pictures that I had seen of him before. His hair and beard were long and he was dressed in a gray jumpsuit like all of the other prisoners.
“I’m glad you’re okay Ben-ani,” John said. “We should get going now while we have a chance.”
We had made it out of the facility, but still had about a two mile run to get back to the ship. As we ran through the sand and closer towards the shore, we could hear yelling from behind us.
“There they are! Get them!” The guards yelled.
“Guys we have to move faster!” John said.
Joseph had a limp that slowed him down, so James and I supported him: James on one side and me on the other, helping him to move faster.
We were about twenty four yards from the ship. We could see Kay-ani and Marley standing at the top of the back door of the ship.
As I looked back, I could see that there were about 20 guards running behind us.
“I’ll hold them off!” John yelled. “You guys get on the ship! Ben-ani when you get there tell them to close the back door. Then, I need you to start the ship. Remember what I showed you earlier?”
“Yeah I do. But what about you?” I said.
“There is a lever to let the ladder down. When you see the green button blinking on the motherboard, that’s me. That’s when you must pull the lever. Understand?”
“Yes.”
“Everyone hurry!” He stopped as we all ran past him and pointed his gun in the guards direction.
“Pew-pew, Boom!” The gun went off.
Marley and Kay-ani helped us onto the ship. I told them to quickly close the back door. I ran to the front, to the motherboard and clicked the two red buttons. The ship began levitating off of the shore, and we were a few feet in the air. I ran to where the lever was to let down the ladder. I told everyone that when they saw the green light blink, to let me know.
“It’s blinking!”
I pulled the lever and the ladder fell down for John. He climbed up into the ship.
Kay-ani ran toward him. “He’s shot!”
“It’s just my leg,” he said. “There’s a med kit in the cabinet under the motherboard. “Ben-ani put this ship in drive, NOW!”
I pressed the button that let the ladder down again and brought the ladder back up. Once the small hole in the middle of the ship finally closed, I ran and moved the black gear forward.
We took off.
