The grand chamber of Luminaris Hall fell silent as Tenzin walked slowly toward Queen Lila and the Elders. His deliberate footsteps echoed against the ornate walls, each step punctuating the muffled screams that filtered in from the city streets outside. The distant sounds of battle and civilian terror formed a haunting backdrop to the tense confrontation unfolding within.
Queen Lila stood firm despite the worry etched across her face. Her celestial robes shimmered faintly in the hall's golden light, a stark contrast to the darkness that was consuming her kingdom beyond these walls. The Elders flanked her protectively, their ancient faces stern but betraying hints of fear.
Tenzin's lips curled into a cold smile as he gestured toward the windows. "Do you hear that?" His voice was unnervingly calm. "That is the sound of your people getting helplessly killed." He paused, allowing the distant screams to fill the silence. "And do you know who is at fault?" His eyes narrowed as he pointed directly at the Queen. "You, Queen Lila."
The accusation hung heavy in the air. Queen Lila's eyes flickered with emotion, but she remained silent. The worry on her face deepened as the sounds of destruction outside grew louder. Her gaze became distant, unfocused—as if she were looking not at Tenzin, but through him, beyond the walls of Luminaris Hall and into the past.
Her mind drifted away from the present danger, back to a time before her crown, before the weight of an entire universe rested on her shoulders...
The Mage Trials - Before the Second Jewel War
The air within the Labyrinth of Illusions shimmered with arcane energy. Walls shifted and morphed, corridors extended endlessly, and reality itself seemed fluid and unreliable. This was the first trial that would test not just magical skill, but the very fortitude of one's mind.
In a secluded corner of the maze, a young Lila stood frozen, trapped within an illusion of her own darkest fear. The magical construct had reached into her memories, pulling forth the nightmare she had tried desperately to escape.
She was seven years old again, cowering in the corner of their small, dilapidated home. Her father's shadow loomed large as he towered over her mother, his words slurred with drink but sharp with venom.
"Useless," he spat, his hand raised. "Both of you, completely useless!"
Young Lila trembled, feeling the phantom pain of past beatings as her mind replayed the scene in perfect, horrible detail. The poverty of their village, the hopelessness in her mother's eyes, the constant fear that permeated every moment of her childhood—it all crashed over her in waves.
Her father's hand began its descent toward her, and Lila closed her eyes, bracing for the impact that had been so familiar in her youth.
But the blow never landed.
Instead, a firm grip caught her wrist, pulling her sideways and out of the illusion. The scene shattered like glass around her, dissolving into sparks of dissipating magic.
Lila gasped for air, finding herself back in the labyrinth, her knees weak and her cheeks wet with tears she hadn't realized she'd shed. Before her stood a young man with determined eyes and a concerned expression.
"Hey, are you ok?" he asked, his voice steady and reassuring.
Lila nodded shakily, trying to compose herself as she wiped away her tears. "Yeah," she managed, her voice barely above a whisper.
The young man nodded toward one of the corridors. "Follow me, I'll get us out of here."
After a moment's hesitation, Lila fell into step behind him. As they navigated the twisting paths of the maze, the illusions seemed to part more easily with his confident stride leading the way.
"Oh, I forgot to say," he said after they'd run in silence for some time. "My name is Kaipo Kasumi. What's your name?"
"Li-," she started, then paused, still cautious. "Lila."
Kaipo glanced back with a genuine smile that seemed to brighten the magical haze around them. "Lila... that's a nice name!"
Something about his sincerity eased the tension in her shoulders. Together, they continued through the remaining sections of the maze, each one becoming less daunting than the last. Where Lila excelled at detecting subtle magical disturbances, Kaipo showed remarkable courage in facing the illusions head-on. Their complementary abilities carried them through to the end of the first trial.
Later that night, the final challenge was announced to the aspiring mages: The Duel of Fates. Each competitor would face off against another, testing not only their combat prowess but their strategic thinking under pressure.
The digital board flickered to life, displaying the match-ups. Lila's heart sank as she saw her name paired with Kaipo's.
Kaipo approached her, his expression a mixture of surprise and resignation. "I guess we have to fight each other," he said.
"Yeah," Lila replied, unable to hide her dismay.
Kaipo studied her for a moment, his brow furrowing slightly. "You seem... weak. Why are you participating in the trials?"
The question struck a nerve, and Lila felt tears threatening to form once again. She looked away, embarrassed by her own vulnerability.
Kaipo immediately backtracked, regret clear in his voice. "No, never mind. I shouldn't have asked."
"It's ok," Lila said, finding her voice again. "I ran away from home. I figured I'd be better off here than back home." She met his gaze with newfound determination. "I must win and make a mage squad, so I won't have to go back home."
Kaipo didn't respond immediately, his expression thoughtful as he seemed to reconsider his initial impression of her.
When their duel began, the arena crackled with energy. Lila fought with desperation, her magic flaring with an intensity that surprised many spectators. Kaipo matched her with skill and precision, his movements deliberate and his magic powerful.
The battle pushed both to their limits, but in the end, Kaipo's greater experience prevailed. As the judges announced his victory, he looked at Lila not with triumph but with respect.
He approached her as they left the arena. "Fate has a way of working itself out," he said softly. "Maybe we'll cross paths again one day."
Three years later, deep within an underground chamber, Lila sat huddled against the cold stone wall. The once vibrant mage had been reduced to a scrawny shadow of her former self after two years of imprisonment. Her cell was barely large enough to stretch out in, with only a small sliding door through which guards passed meager portions of food and water.
Throughout her captivity, Lila had maintained a rigid silence, never uttering a single word to her captors. She had learned early that speaking brought no relief, no answers—only more suffering.
Today, however, was different.
The heavy iron door creaked open, flooding the tiny cell with light from a torch in the corridor—the first real illumination she had seen beyond the brief flashes when meals arrived. Lila squinted, her eyes burning from the sudden brightness after so much darkness.
A man stood in the doorway, his silhouette outlined by an eerie dark blue light that seemed to emanate from his very being. As he stepped inside, Lila felt an immediate pressure bearing down on her, as if the mere presence of this stranger was enough to crush her life force.
He approached slowly, studying her with calculating eyes. "Your future is telling," he said, his voice echoing against the stone walls. "You really do possess it. The power of the future is within you already."
Confusion and fear sparked within Lila. "Let me go!" she shouted, her voice hoarse from disuse. "I don't know what you're talking about!"
The stranger continued his approach unperturbed. He knelt before her and placed his hand on her chest, his palm glowing with that same unsettling blue light. Nothing happened. The man frowned slightly, withdrawing his hand.
"I figured so," he mused. "Somehow I can't extract it. I guess because it hasn't happened yet, fate isn't allowing me to take it even though it's already in you." His lips curled into a smile. "That means... he does it. Kaipo, what an interesting man you are."
At the mention of that name, Lila's eyes widened. "Kaipo? How do you know him?"
The man laughed softly. "Well, he is the perfect human after all, the creator of Essence Manifest."
Lila stared at him, bewildered by his cryptic statements. None of it made sense to her.
"When I get my hand on that power..." He laughed again, the sound chilling her to the bone. "I will be all-powerful. Though it seems before he resets everything, I won't have my chance to extract the power out of you, so I'll have to wait until after then." He leaned closer, his eyes boring into hers. "Remember this, young girl. My name is Silearza. When the time is right, you will remember this conversation. That'll be the time I retrieve your power."
Before Lila could react, Silearza's fist glowed brightly and punched straight through her chest. Pain exploded through her body as darkness claimed her vision.
Lila bolted upright with a gasp, her hands clutching at her chest. Instead of cold stone beneath her, she felt soft sheets. Instead of darkness, warm light filled the room. She was in a bed—a hospital bed on Stellara Prime.
Beside her sat Captain Erisa, holding her hand with gentle concern.
Overwhelmed with relief, Lila threw her arms around her Squad Captain, tears streaming down her face. "I thought I died. I thought you died trying to save me, but it was all a bad dream."
Captain Erisa returned the embrace, but when they separated, Lila noticed the sadness in her mentor's eyes.
"What's the matter?" Lila asked, suddenly apprehensive.
Captain Erisa took a deep breath. "You did die. You have been brought back to life. We all have been brought back to life, thanks to Kaipo."
Lila blinked, struggling to comprehend. "What?"
"After I died trying to save you and after your capture, Kaipo continued his quest to gain the Pure Heart," Captain Erisa explained. "The Second Jewel War commenced with Kaipo fighting alongside the High Mages. The High Mages actually turned out to be the other Mage Squad Captains. It's good Kaipo still decided to keep the principles of the Mage Association. Though I wish I was there to help the burden of fighting the people they fought. The fight was long and hard, but eventually Kaipo pulled it off. There is more to the story, but that's all I'll tell you for now."
Lila sat in stunned silence, trying to process everything. The trials, Kaipo, her capture—it all seemed like another lifetime ago.
"He left a message for you," Captain Erisa said softly.
"Who, Kaipo?" Lila asked, her heart quickening.
Captain Erisa smiled and nodded. "Yes. His message along with all the memories from the Second Jewel War is placed inside of my head already. Probably of Kaipo's doing." She paused, gathering her thoughts. "Kaipo says sorry for not being there to save you. He wishes it was his life instead of mine that was taken. He wishes that we both could have been with him on his journey to the Pure Heart. He also says even though we all spent little time together on the squad before you were captured, but he liked you. He says when he looked in your eyes he always saw a future you two could have had together and he had always wondered what pain you were running from."
Lila's eyes widened as Captain Erisa continued.
"He says sorry, but he looked through all your memories and saw why you didn't want to go back home. He says he hopes you enjoy your time with your mother in peace rather than the suffering you both went through in the past. Kaipo says he loves you, Lila, and really wishes you were with him right now in the middle of The Land of Spade. He says he knows after hearing this you will probably want to head out to find him, but he says that there is still work to be done, because the evils of the real Land of Spade have arrived in present time and that there is a mysterious mage within the Azure Universe that will bring pain upon you."
The words washed over Lila like a wave, leaving her speechless. Tears flowed freely down her cheeks as emotions she had buried deep within resurfaced. Kaipo had seen her—truly seen her—and despite everything, he cared for her.
Captain Erisa squeezed her hand gently. "It's going to be alright, Lila. Hold your head upright because your time to be Queen is coming. I don't know why but I have a specific time put in my head when I will die and you will become Queen. So I'll train you up for that moment, because I'm sure it was Kaipo who put it in there, and if the threat he is hinting at is as big as he makes it to be, you must be ready."
Erisa smiled softly. "Kaipo did leave one last little line for you."
Lila looked up, wiping away her tears.
Captain Erisa's voice shifted, and suddenly it was as if Kaipo himself were speaking: "Lila, the time you feel fear greater than when you were with your father, think of me and I'll be there. It won't be any time soon, but when it happens, you'll know."
