The rain poured, dripping down the bus window. It was the kind of rain you could take a nice, relaxing walk in. I smiled gently, watching the droplets trail down the glass, each one sliding faster when it merged with a slightly bigger droplet.
My cell phone rang in my purse, vibrating slightly. "Hello?" I answered. There was a slight chatter on the other end before a man’s voice came through.
"Hello… um… can I speak to a Miss Anderson?” My eyes flicked to the window before returning to my belongings.
"This is she," I said, holding the phone between my shoulder and ear as I gathered my things. The bus was nearing my stop.
"I'm sorry to be a bother, ma’am, but your boyfriend, Mister Madsen, has gotten into a car accident." I sighed, closing my eyes for a moment. Of course, he did. It was raining, dark out, and that man drove like a NASA racer. Honestly, it would be more surprising if he hadn’t gotten into an accident in this kind of weather.
"Right… what hospital should I make my way to?" "North General Hospital… in Harlem, ma’am," the man said after a short pause. "Thank you. Would you let him know I’ll be there shortly?" I asked, picking up my purse and slinging it over my shoulder before bringing the phone back to my ear.
"Of course, ma’am… we’ll see you then," he replied. I nodded, even though he couldn’t see me, then hung up and slipped my phone into my purse. As the bus came to a stop, I stood up and made my way to the front, giving a small smile to the driver. He gave a short nod and opened the doors. "I swear, you're going to drive me crazy, Sam," I muttered to myself, pulling out my umbrella before stepping off the bus and walking down the street.
