Lorella Taylor’s little niece swipes a bottle of cold syrup in a store, unbeknownst to her aunt, in their home state of Nevada. A stern judge, who refuses to hear about the niece taking the medicine when Lorella wasn’t looking, sentences her to a few months of probation.

Lorella takes to her plain and stern, yet attractive probation officer, Madison Cady, and eventually learns that Madison has taken to her as well when they bump into each other after Lorella has completed her sentence.

She and Madison build a loving relationship—until Madison is tragically killed in a car accident. Afterward, Lorella goes to stay with her brother Trevor, a firefighter, up in Oregon.
