In our getaway car

One of your hands gripped the steering-wheel,

The other grabbed my hand, and I screamed,

"Come on, darling! We've gotten this far!"

And we kept speeding away from the cops in our getaway car.

The music blasted louder than the sirens

My thoughts were brighter than the lights, red and blue

You told me we'd rob that bank, and as usual you saw it through

You've never, ever, broken a promise so far,

And you were laughing that night in our getaway car.

I sang along to the song

Because I've always been a singer

And they yelled, "Stop the vehicle!"

As you gave them the finger

In your eyes I saw a glimmer brighter than every star

And you looked like a dream that night in our getaway car.

I threw some money at the road

Gave the street something to chew

And in that moment there was nothing,

Nothing better than just me and you

The road was reaching a dead end, covered in broken glass jars

But we just kept the motor going in our getaway car.

I half-laughed, half-screamed

When I saw that "DANGER" sign

And you looked at me and you nodded

And we both knew that was the end of our time

You shouted "Are you ready?"

And I nodded with a start

As you let go of the steering wheel of our getaway car.

You held me in your arms

While we drove off that edge, laughing louder than ever,

And the breeze ran through your hair

Despite the dry summer weather

We tumbled through the night sky

And just like that we hit the ground

My neck felt sore, and I felt numb

And that's when I knew we were down.

We were beaten and bruised, but you still had my heart

And now I'm dead and so are you, and so is our getaway car.
