這是最近有人問我的問題，提出來和大家分享

I am finished / I’m finished 和 I have finished / I’ve finished 意思有沒有不同呢？

答案是有的，非常不同

I am finished. / I’m finished. 意思是完成了某事

比如東西吃完了、工作做完了、報告寫完了……

此時的 finished 是當形容詞用，表示「完成(某事)的」

另外「人 + be + finished」也有「完蛋了」的意思

比如若情侶中一人說 We’re finished. / We’re done. 或 I’m finished / done with you. 意思就是兩人的關係玩完了，要分手了

闖了大禍之後說 I’m finished. 意思就是「我完(蛋)了」

至於 I have finished. / I’ve finished. 則根本是在文法上不對的句子

因為如果拿它當動詞的話，後面要加受詞

比如要說 I have finished dinner. / I have finished my report.

而且用的是 have + p.p. 的句型，是現在完成式

意思是強調我的確「已經」吃完了晚餐 / 寫完了報告

並非還沒有吃完或寫完

如果雙方都知道是指什麼東西的話，可以在 finished 之後接受格代名詞 it / them

但還是必須有受詞的

例如要問人家的話，要說 Have you finished it / them?

我們再來比較一下 Have you finished it? 和 Are you finished with it? 這兩句

首先各位應該要注意到，第二句裡多了個 with

所以要問別人某事是否完成了，或是否已使用完畢、不再需要某物了

要用的是 Are you finished with it? 這句

服務生要問客人是否吃好了，盤子可以收了，也是用這句才對

(也可把 with it 省略)

但如果問別人 Have you finished it?

則重點又是放在「已經」

問的人用的是質疑的口氣，想知道的是對方某件事到底做好了沒

比如媽媽看到小孩在玩而沒有在寫功課或唸書

就會問：Have you finished your homework? / Did you finish your homework?

而問 Are you finished with it? 則並沒有質疑的口氣

最後，「be done」這個片語也有完成某事的意思

所以 I’m finished. = I’m done.

Are you finished with the computer? = Are you done with the computer? (你電腦用好了嗎？ / 還要繼續用嗎？)

但是它在現在的英語中並沒有「完蛋」的意思

要講「完蛋」的話要加個介系詞，「be done for」才是「完蛋」

比如：He is done for. (他完蛋了。)

另外也可用「be done Ving」表示不會再繼續做此事了

例如：I’m done being nice to her. (我不會再繼續對她好了。)

She’s done helping her brother out. (她不會再繼續幫她哥哥了。)
