The Daily Recommendation from the Earthling Glassy Snail.
Today’s movie is Guardians of the Galaxy from the Marvel series—a story that helps you understand what it means to have family across different species, races, cultures, and backgrounds.
I especially love the storyline in the second film, where the protagonist, Peter Quill (Star-Lord), finally meets his biological father, Ego. Ego talks about how “cruel” Quill’s adoptive father, Yondu, was for keeping them apart. Now, they can finally reunite as a real family—yay!
But little does Quill know: the seemingly heartless Yondu was actually the one who had been protecting him with lies and raising him to be a man all along. As for Ego, his biological father, a self-claimed “god”, he turns out to be a universe-conquering monster who’s worse than a beast.
Even if Quill’s “true family” now wasn't related by blood, it consists of a bunch of unreliable, chaotic alien weirdos—so what? That’s still way better than being tied to a narcissist who goes around every planet looking for people to call him father, deluded that the whole universe wants to be unified under his rule. Someone who tries to manipulate Quill, always gaslighting him by saying things like, "Without me, you’re nothing.", "Of course, everyone wants to be like me, and work for my planet, I am a God!"

This movie shows that sometimes blood ties, even ones as “divine” as Ego’s, aren’t what make someone worth returning to. Even though Yondu may have technically “kidnapped” Quill in history, when you really think about that. It is such a fortune for Quill to be kidnapped so that his true family had already gathered around him, the so-called Earthling orphan, from a long, long time ago.

No one, and I mean no one, should ever get to tell you where you belong—or where you don’t.
