My sister is 19 today

spent all I had on flour for cake

If she smiles I’ll be happy

lose myself in the pattern of baking

flour.

eggs.

milk.

Hours pass in a moment

Pure satisfaction

cake hot from the pan

Layers are stacked

icing is spread

realization

she wants dinosaurs

toy dinosaurs on the cake she said

Unfounded guilt

if only I had money

I could make her smile

no money for her dinosaurs

A last resort

Coloured paper and a google search

3 failed attempts

2 successes

a lime green T-Rex

folded paper claws

Brontosaurus stands tall

brown paper creases

She will have dinosaurs

the guilt quiets

she smiles

someday I will have money for dinosaurs
