"I dunno man, are you sure? This is just really sketchy."

Adam nodded. "I'm sure. It's like Amanda doesn't even love me anymore, man. No, this has been coming for a while."

"But... You found this girl on Craig's list. If that's not sketchy I don't know what is."

"Yeah, it's sketchy. But it doesn't matter, have you seen this girl's picture? We're just meeting for coffee today, no big deal," said Adam.

"Leave me out of it."

After work, Adam took off his tie, combed his hair, and drove downtown to the cafe the girl had suggested. His stomach fluttered a little, but the realization that he would have to go back home to his wife steeled his resolve. He walked inside and scanned the room.

She sat at a table in the corner, facing the door. She caught his eye and squinted, and her face lit up in recognition. Adam walked over and sat across from her, and made a show of looking her up and down.

He had a hard time looking past her body, but her face was just as beautiful. 

"What's a girl like you doing in a place like this?" said Adam.

The girl laughed politely. "What's next, you wanna know my name and my sign?"

She took a sip of her drink. "Tiffany. I'm a Virgo."

"Virgo? We should do something about that," said Adam, trying to sound charming.

She laughed again. "You sound nervous."

Adam's eyes widened for a second. "Nah, I'm just a little rusty. I haven't been on a date since high school," he said with a shrug.

"You said you were married?" said Tiffany. 

Adam shrugged again. "I'm pretty sure she's cheating on me. She works late every night and I haven't gotten laid in weeks."

"So there's really only one thing on your mind, huh?" said Tiffany, a little sadly.

"Yeah, right now it's you," said Adam.

Tiffany laughed. "Do you have any diseases?"

 

Adam shook his head.

"How about medical history, any problems?"

Adam frowned. "I have a bad back, but nothing serious. Why?"

"Liability," Tiffany said simply. "Heart or lung disease?"

"Nope."

"Diabetes?"

"Nope."

"What about high blood pressure?"

"No, I'm pretty healthy."

"When's the last time you donated blood?" said Tiffany.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"I had somebody pass out once," said Tiffany. "Like I said, liability."

Adam shrugged. "Not since high school, probably."

"Alright, are you on any medication?"

"Painkillers for my back, but that's about it," said Adam.

"Great. Who's your doctor, by the way?"

"Isn't that kinda personal?" said Adam.

"Not as personal as what we're gonna be doing later," Tiffany said.

Adam salivated a little. "Uh... Dr. Collins, a couple buildings down from here." He looked back down at her chest.

Tiffany laughed. "Easy there tiger, there'll be time for that. I'm kinda busy tonight, what do you have going on tomorrow?"

"Not a whole lot," said Adam.

"Great," said Tiffany. "So do you wanna meet at that shitty old motel by the highway? The Lone Star, say 9:00?"

"Sounds like a plan to me," said Adam, grinning.

He drove home slowly, dreading the thought of his family. His wife would be out, working late, probably sleeping with her secretary yet again. His eldest daughter was a stupid bimbo whether he liked it or not, he expected to see her doing interracial porn in less than five years. His son was just a little fairy boy who watched cartoons about ponies, terrible at sports, and with more friends online than he had in real life. 

Tiffany seemed like she could be the one bright spot in his life. As far as Adam was concerned his family had betrayed him years ago.

He pulled in his garage and went inside, to his surprise Amanda was already cooking dinner.

"Hi honey," she said warmly.

"You're home early," said Adam, surprised. 

"I know, I just wanted to surprise you. We're having steak tonight!"

Steak. No wonder it smelled so delicious. "What's the special occasion?" 

"I've been working so much lately that my boss just gave me a promotion! I got a fifteen percent raise today, and I won't have to work sixty hours a week anymore!" Amanda said, beaming.

"That's... That's great, honey," said Adam. "Nice job."

Amanda kissed him. "Dinner will be ready in half an hour."

Adam walked upstairs. "Hey Dad, guess who got a B on her calc test?" said his daughter as he walked by her room.

"You got a B? I thought you were failing calculus?" said Adam.

"I was, but I actually studied this time. Turns out that's the secret!"

"Hey Dad, guess what?" his son said from across the hall. "I joined the cross country team today!"

"That's... That's great! That'll be good for you," said Adam.

He walked into his own room and laid on his bed. They weren't bad kids... But it's not like they would find out about his infidelity. Besides, it wouldn't be their business anyway. Amanda would be the only one he's be betraying... And Tiffany had a better rack anyway.

He ate steak and went to bed early.

Adam pulled up to the Lone Star motel at 9:00, just as planned. He had told Amanda he was going to go watch a fight on pay per view with some friends... Not that there were any fights on.

"Are you Adam?" said the man at the concierge desk.

"Ah, yeah," said Adam.

"Room 201."

Adam climbed the stairs and knocked on the last door on the right. Tiffany opened it, wearing a white bathrobe.

"You're late," she said.

Adam looked at his watch. "It's 9:03."

"I don't like to be kept waiting."

Adam walked into the room and closed the door behind him.

"So, how much?" he said.

Tiffany shrugged. "It depends on how well you do." She untied the belt on her bathrobe. "Ahem."

"Oh, sorry." Adam turned around, a little confused.

Something heavy hit him in the back of his head and the world went dark.

Adam woke naked, in pain. The lights were too bright. It was so cold. He rubbed his eyes, and his face got wet. Why was he wet? 

He was lying in a bathtub, covered in ice. Adam groaned and tried to sit up, but lances of pain shot out from his back.

Blood covered the floor. Adam couldn't think through the pain, a thick fog clouded his brain.

He carefully felt along his back, where the pain seemed to concentrate. He felt a large wound stitched up, and his hand came back bloody. He laid back in despair, but he saw a scrap of paper sitting on the counter. He could just reach it.

"Dear Adam," he read. "Sorry I had to do this to you, but that's what you get for trying to betray your family. You're probably going to die, but there's a phone on the bed if you can reach it to call 911.
