I lay sitting on the floor for a while later.

Then I got up and stumbled to the hospital.

I found Joy's room and sat down on the floor beside her.

She was unconscious.

I felt tears welling up in my eyes.

I pulled off my glasses and stared.

Even though her eyes were closed and her skin ghostly pale, she was still as beautiful as we'd first met.

I looked around, surprised at my new unaided vision.

But that didn't matter, not at the moment.

There was a knock at the door, and I realised how stupid I looked, lying crouched on the floor, my head on the side of Joy's bed.

I didn't bother to change my position.

That didn't matter.

Steven peered in, closely followed by Vicky.

There was something in his hand.

A plastic bag...

With a phone.

My phone.

The screen was now completely shattered, with a massive crack going right through the middle.

I accepted it gratefully.

And then they left.

And we were alone again.
