Something strange happens when we park up at the front of the lake house, almost unheard of in the middle of a Californian summer as we giggle scrambling out of the open top car and the rain begins to sprinkle down onto us. He closes up the roof lifting me up into his arms in one swift motion as he jogs up to the front door. I kiss him irresistibly as the rain sprinkles over our faces and he laughs. Leaving our items in the boot as the rain hammers down and he places me onto the sofa, stepping out of his trainers as he hoovers over me. I begin undoing my dress which is now damp as I pull it over my head and let it fall to the floor.

Jay unbuckles my sandals slowly, his damp hair falling over his forehead in loose blonde waves. Wordlessly he pulls his chinos off letting his shirt hang open after he’s placed my sandals down on the floor.

“Can’t believe it’s raining” I murmur as he moves on top of me. The sash window showing patterings of rain and droplets of water trailing down the glass.

“Mmmm” he manages as a crash of thunder sounds outside and I giggle feeling him engulf me.

“You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me” he whispers as I smile seeing a flash of lightning illuminate him above me.

It's a miracle we ever manage to get anything done I think idly holding him in my arms after we’ve made love of the couch. Our clothes scattered around the floor as the rain picks up a little and he breathes softly on top of me.

“I’ll load the car with our suitcases” he whispers looking down at me as I rub his back.

Pulling his shirt on, I walk through to the grande hall into our kitchen set on cooking him a steak, he would eat steak for breakfast, lunch and dinner if he could.

Frying it up to medium and setting it with a peppercorn sauce before I settle on making him some dirty fries. I plate the lot up and place it on the large oak table before walking over to the wine chiller.

"I need to tell you" he says sneaking up behind me arms going around my waist. A wide smile spreads across my face. My Jay.

"That seeing you in our kitchen with nothing but my blue shirt on cooking dinner and drinking wine is the best sight I ever saw" he smiles and nuzzles into my neck. I always thought I was fairly average looking. Not to Jay. His eyes look over me and with anybody else I would be self conscious yet with him I feel beautiful and I can feel his desire.

"It's ready" I say turning to face him and feeling his embrace around my body. He smiles and I eye his chenille jumper and jeans realising that he has prepped himself for the journey later.

"No problem my love" I tell him and we eat together. I never find our silences awkward. We are content in each others company. He still cannot keep his hands off of me, even for steak. One of his hands is resting on my bare thigh.

My phone buzzes breaking our serene silence and I glance over at it. A message from Matthew illuminates on the display and I place my cutlery down giving it a quick read.

"It’s Matty" I announce to Jay and he looks up carefully. A measured expression on his face as he considers what to say.

“No we haven’t spoken at all” he announces and I feel guilty about ruining their friendship. I watch him sip his coffee, he is driving to the airport later and will have a drink on the plane instead.

“However no more fighting” he adds hastily flashing me his best charming grin before he grasps the plates and cleans the kitchen. I watch him quietly deciding whether to message Matthew back.

“Here” he says interrupting my thoughts as he pulls his phone out.

“I’ll tell him we’re away, on holiday.” He smiles placing the phone to his ear and waiting for the call to connect. I watch his easy grin as they talk on the phone and he explains that we’re visiting Australia for the break. He nods along to the conversation and I feel my worries disperse.

Taylor has fallen asleep on the sofa. Watching movies with her wrapped around me after what has been the best day. We are making memories and enjoying each other’s company.

It’s fairly evident that she is worried about Matthew, with him still messaging her and standing up for her at every opportunity that arises it’s not hard to see why. However with our bridges mended and Matthew and at least pretending we are still good mates that will all stop. I will not be the person that is a problem in this whole situation and so when I say no more fighting I mean it.

Briefly I look at her asleep in my lap and marvel at how I’ve managed it all, imagining her in Australia with me tomorrow laying in the sunshine by our pool.

"I love you, let's go get lost together and start our lives" I whisper stroking her face as she stares back up at me in the firelight. A wide grin spreads across her lips so I kiss her delicately again.

And just like that our lives are our own, full of a sense of adventure. And with Taylor by my side, I do not intend on losing her to anybody. Not even the likes of Matthew James Henderson.
