To support having headings in a user-submitted posts.
Motivation
In essay-type writing, authors often want to insert a heading in the beginning of a section to make the writing more organized and to aid reader understanding.
In writing challenges, submitters often need to group their texts into one submission instead of submitting in multiple posts. The submitters therefore need a way to visually divide the submissions.
Current Status
The online editor provides no support headings. Headings pasted onto the online editor are converted to normal paragraphs.
Users work around the lack of headings using bold and Italic fonts, horizontal rules, decorative texts etc.
Suggestions
Enable the use of heading in user-submitted posts.
Provide explicit supports through the online editor. Preserve but sanitize heading during copy-pasting.
Render headings with appropriate styling to the readers.
Variations and Alternatives
Alternative 1: allow multiple levels of headings
Allow authors to insert headings from level 3 h3 through level 6 h6. This provides more freedom to users.
Note: It is noticed that h2 is already used for chapter title. Therefore user headings should begin with h3.
Alternative 2: only allow a “flat” level of headings
Allow only one level of headings in user-submitted posts. This gives developer more control by simplifying layout and styling.
