It had been two days since the crash. Maybe more, maybe less. We were losing track of time. Sleep wasn’t common for any of us. We couldn’t relax or sit still for more than two minutes, for the fear of slipping away.
My arm wasn’t healing. I think it was beginning to worsen. Holly had done her best but wrapping my arm was about the only thing she could do as a substitute elementary school teacher. I felt useless.
We had been fetched by Will to get water. Holly started feeling sick. We thought it was nothing.
Passing by the small plane, that I had usually avoided, Charlie stopped and looked at it. I never could tell what he was thinking. I urged him to move away. It evoked emotion from all of us.
“What if we left people for dead in there?” Charlie asked, his voice quavering.
“We got everyone out that survived.”
I heard his labored breaths. We all breathed heavily. It was cold outside. The snow hadn’t melted yet. I wanted to forget how we clung on to each other last night. But as I looked to him from behind, I couldn’t see the man who killed three kids at a Halloween party. I could only see a man.
“Charlie?” I asked, my voice soft.
He turned to me.
“Tell me what really happened on Halloween. The full story.”
