**Here on out, there will be a sprinkle of LGBTQ, so if you're not really into that, I recommend you stop your journey. If you don't mind, then continue, by all means! Onto the book!**

It was weird because we hadn’t had walked any further than the site. I hadn’t seen anywhere else besides the camp, the plane, and the river where we would get water and wood for the fire. It felt strange, as if I wasn’t supposed to be there. We walked out of the forest.
My eyes widened. We all were awestruck. Beyond the forest, just a short walk out, was an empty snow field. There was nothing. No forest, no trees, for what seemed like miles. A long way out I got a glimpse of a snowy peak. All this time I had thought we were surrounded by trees. Just outside, there was nothing.
The man and woman had two large sleds. The wolf-dog we had met was a sled dog and was accompanied by twenty-four other dogs.
The woman took Holly and Will in her sled, along with pounds of mail to be delivered, and the man took Charlie and me. I was the closest to the man leading the sled. When we were all strapped in, they both shouted in unison.
“Mush! Mush!”
And slowly but surely, the dogs got going. I felt a bit bad for them because all of a sudden there was two extra men they had to pull. But it’s not like we weighed much at the time, anyway. It wasn’t a fun ride, either, because snow was constantly getting in my eyes. I wasn’t about to complain. We were being rescued. I hadn’t felt that well in a while.
“We’re leaving. We’re finally leaving,” I said to Charlie, who looked a bit euphoric.
He turned to me, wiping the snow from his eyes. “I guess you’ll finally get to turn me in for a crime I didn’t commit.”
He was right. I had totally forgotten about that. Is that being he was thinking about? Charlie isn’t going back to a loving home, or a family. He was going to somewhere much worse than what we had just been through. Prison.
The man interrupted deep thought by saying, “We found the rubble a little bit further off. Decided to go investigate. Glad we did!”
I turned to look at him. His face was the only visible part on his body. He had a wide smile on his face, something that his sister wasn’t sporting at the moment. The fact that he was smiling made me want to smile. I was supposed to be happy, but the thought of Charlie yanked me back to reality.
“Say, what’s your name?” he asked.
“Duncan.”
“Oh, so like the doughnuts?” he giggled, making me groan. “I’m Garrett. That’s my sister, Abigail.”
“Hey, Garrett,” I said. He smiled. While Charlie introduced himself, I stared at Garrett. My rescuer. His teeth were rather white, making me question if he brushes furiously or it was just the snow.
“You’re staring at me, you know,” Garrett said, looking a bit flustered.
It was then I realized I was back in regular society, talking with regular people. It wasn’t normal to stare at people. What a shame. He was worth staring at.
