I awoke, yawning and scratching my head. Was I asleep? I realized that I was asleep. A cop can’t fall asleep on the job! But I did. My head flipped to the left, and alas, Charlie was still next to me, but he was looking through the window.
I looked to everyone else, and they looked to be asleep.
“Hey.”
I eyed the moon that was hanging on the short girls necklace. It was cool because it was made out of tumbled stone.
“Hey. Police guy.”
I used to be a big on rocks when I was a kid. I had a whole damn collection and everything. I knew each and every rock and crystal on the planet. I think she was wearing tumbled rose quartz. It was very pretty.
“Duncan.”
I sighed and turned to the criminal I was chained to. I told him not to say my name again, tiredly. When he turned to me, his eyes were wide and fearful like I’ve never seen before.
“I think we may have a problem,” he said, pointing to the window. I leaned over him to look where he was pointing, and my heart sank.
The left engine was burning. It looked to be overheating, with smoke and flames making a trail behind for the small plane. Well, I tried to reassure myself, as long as the right engine isn’t fuming, he can at least land the plane safely.
I hesitantly looked out my right window. I saw smoke coming out of that one too. Bad thoughts started to swarm my head. Charlie looked at me. I looked to everyone else, but they were oblivious to the smoke. Either sleeping or reading some magazines, not hearing our whispers.
I couldn’t see the captain’s seat from here because the door was closed. Then, all of a sudden, I heard the plane rumble. That’s when everybody looked up from whatever they were doing. We felt what seemed to be turbulence, but Charlie and I both knew it wasn’t from the wind. I looked to Charlie, knowing this isn’t going to end well. Everybody else was finally awake and murmuring amongst themselves. I made sure Charlie’s seat belt was buckled, then mine.
Then we started falling.
Charlie passed out next to me. His head bumping into the window.
People screamed.
I tried to keep my consciousness, breathing, breathing, breathe. But I knew that this plane was going to make an impact very soon.
Air pressure dropped. Purses, bags, cameras, everything started to fly.
Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.
I am not going down this way.
