One particular reason for the use of this new term has to do with current public opinion of the idea of “psychics,” a term which those involved in the AVPSI no longer favor using due to the misconceptions brought about by human deviants and con-artists. Psychics and psychic powers are still a sensitive subject, and unfortunately, the overactive behavior of false psychics has tarnished the reputation of the idea of psychic phenomena. We will refer to psionics to describe psychic abilities in the manner where they are real abilities which can actually be used by particular individuals, and often refer to proclaimed psychics to suggest that the individual does not actually possess these powers (or can't be proven). The public opinion of ESP powers has been diminished to the human populous, regardless of what terminology is used. The public opinion for all other Altiri is popular, and a separation of faith in these abilities between humans and Altiri is recognized. This may be one core reason why the AVPSI would prefer to operate without humanity becoming aware of this data acquisition. However, even with all current evidence collected showing that ESP powers do exist, the research (if presented to other humans on its face) will likely be scrutinized out of existence.
